Healthy restaurants in Sacramento: a calorie-aware guide

An overhead spread of grain bowls, salmon, avocado toast and salads on a wooden table
Sacramento has plenty of places where the calorie-aware order is the normal order.
Sacramento has a solid bench of restaurants where a protein-first, calorie-aware order is just the regular menu. The ten below cover Midtown, Downtown, East Sac, Land Park, Natomas and Arden, from poke and Greek plates to a deli salad and a plant-based dinner. Addresses, what to order and whether calories are posted are listed for each. Everything was checked on September 19, 2026; hours and menus change, so call ahead.

What makes a restaurant work for a calorie plan?

Not the word "healthy" on the sign. Three things matter: a grilled or roasted protein you can build the plate around, a vegetable side that is on the menu rather than a special request, and sauces or dressings that come on the side. A place that has all three lets you eat a normal meal that fits the day. The eating-out guide covers the ordering rules; this page is where to use them.

One more thing worth knowing. Chains with 20 or more locations have had to post calories on the menu since May 2018 under the FDA menu labeling rule, so at those places the number on the board beats any estimate. At the independents, photograph the plate and check the servings. Independent restaurants are not lighter than chains: a 2016 study of non-chain restaurant meals in three US cities measured an average of 1,205 calories per meal.

None of the restaurants below is affiliated with NutraCompass. They are here because the order works.

Midtown

Sweetgreen, 1629 S Street (95811). Salads, warm bowls and protein plates, open daily 10 to 10, and part of a 270-plus location chain, so calories are posted on the boards and in the app. Order a bowl with grilled chicken, extra greens, vinaigrette on the side, and skip the bread. Opened December 2025, in the Ice Blocks stretch of S Street.

Fish Face Poke Bar, 1104 R Street, Suite 100 (95811). Chef Billy Ngo's poke counter inside WAL Public Market. Ahi or salmon bowl over greens or light rice, a ponzu-style sauce instead of the creamy ones, and go easy on the crisps and macadamia. Single location, so no posted calories: photograph the bowl.

Beach Hut Deli, 2406 J Street (95816). The Sacramento-region deli institution, founded in Granite Bay in 1981 and now more than 40 locations across California, Nevada and Oregon, which means calories should be on the in-store boards. The Chef Salad is on the menu; otherwise a turkey sandwich with no mayo and no extra cheese is the lighter play. Also downtown at 711 K Street and at Loehmann's Plaza, 2535 Fair Oaks Boulevard.

Veg Kitchen + Bar, 2431 J Street, second floor (95816). Plant-based, seasonal, with gluten-free and nut-free options year round. A seasonal vegetable bowl or a salad keeps it light; skip the fried starters. Single location, no posted calories.

Downtown edge

Petra Greek, 1122 16th Street (95814). Gyros, souvlaki plates and Greek salads at 16th and K. The chicken souvlaki plate with Greek salad in place of fries is the order, or a Greek salad topped with chicken. Three locations, so no posted calories. Open weekdays 11 to 10, Saturday 3 to 11, Sunday 11 to 8.

East Sacramento

Selland's Market-Café, 5340 H Street (95819). Family-owned since 2001, with a deli case that does the work for you: herb salmon fillet or herb roasted chicken breast with roasted broccoli, or the Farmer's Market salad. Two locations (the other is 915 Broadway), no posted calories. It is also a mile from Sac State, which is why it shows up again in the student guide.

Roxie Deli & Barbeque, 3340 C Street (95816). Made-to-order sandwiches and barbecue, family-owned since 2005. The lighter order is a salad or a turkey sandwich without mayo, and the barbecue sides are where the calories live. Single location. Weekdays 7 to 7, Saturday 8 to 7, Sunday 8 to 5.

Land Park

Mendocino Farms, 4730 Freeport Boulevard, Suite 110 (95822). Sandwiches, salads and grain bowls. Half sandwich with a side salad, or a full salad with grilled chicken and dressing on the side. The chain opened its 100th location in June 2026, so calories are posted. Also in Midtown at 1610 R Street and in Arden at 2339 Fair Oaks Boulevard.

Natomas

Jack's Urban Eats, 4730 Natomas Boulevard (95835). A Sacramento original from 1998: carved meats, made-to-order salads and plates, cafeteria style. Build a salad around carved turkey with vinaigrette, and skip the Urban Fries. About 11 locations, under the posting threshold, so log it with a photo. Also in Midtown at 1230 20th Street and at Loehmann's Plaza, 545 Munroe Street.

Arden

Urban Plates, 2080 Fair Oaks Boulevard (95825). Scratch-made plates: a grilled protein plus two sides. Grilled chicken or grilled salmon with two vegetable sides and no bread is a complete, filling meal with a known number, because this is a 30-plus location chain that posts calories. Their nutrition sheet, dated May 2026, lists grilled chicken without skin at 230 calories for 5 ounces, grilled salmon at 330 for 5.25 ounces and grilled steak at 250 for 4.5 ounces, before sides. Opened December 2024 at the corner of Fair Oaks and Howe, in the same center as the Sweetgreen that followed a year later.

How do you log any of these?

At the chains (Sweetgreen, Beach Hut, Mendocino Farms, Urban Plates), use the posted number. At the independents, photograph the plate from above before the first bite, then check the servings the app suggests and nudge them up if the plate is generous. Add the drink separately. The accuracy guide explains what a photo catches and misses, and why nudging up on big portions is the right instinct.

NutraCompass reads the plate, logs it, and moves the rest of the day around it. Dinner at any of these fits, as long as the day has room. If it does not, the plan bends; nothing restarts.

Questions people ask

Which Sacramento restaurants post calories on the menu?

Any chain with 20 or more locations must, under the FDA rule. On this list that is Sweetgreen, Beach Hut Deli, Mendocino Farms and Urban Plates. The independents and small local chains do not have to, and mostly do not.

What is the healthiest fast-casual option in Midtown?

A bowl with grilled chicken and extra greens at Sweetgreen, or an ahi bowl over greens at Fish Face Poke Bar. Both are protein-first with the sauce under your control.

Is poke a low-calorie meal?

It can be. Fish over greens or half rice with a light sauce is a 400 to 600 calorie bowl. Creamy sauces, full rice, crisps and macadamia can double it.

Are these restaurants partners of NutraCompass?

No. They are listed because the calorie-aware order is already on the menu. NutraCompass has a separate partner program for restaurants and gyms; none of the places on this page is part of it.

How current is this list?

Every address and menu note was checked on September 19, 2026. Restaurants close and menus change, so call ahead if you are making a trip of it.
