Healthy eating near Sac State: a student's guide

Friends sharing plates of food around a table
Eating well between classes is mostly about knowing which three or four places are the default.
Within about a mile of Sac State there are eight off-campus restaurants and three on-campus options where a protein-first order is easy. Two are a few minutes' walk from the south side of campus, two sit along J Street, and four cluster at Fair Oaks and Howe across the Guy West Bridge. Sac State's campus is at 6000 J Street and had 31,307 students in fall 2025, so these places are used to a student order. Checked September 19, 2026.

What is on campus?

Campus dining is run by University Enterprises, and its eateries page lists the current spots. Three of them work for a calorie plan without any effort.

The Servery at the Dining Commons, on the Residence Hall Quad, is all-you-care-to-eat with a salad bar, steamed vegetables, fresh fruit and carved-to-order meat at dinner. Campus dining says staff will build low-fat, vegetarian or vegan menus on request. The winning plate is the one you would build at a restaurant: salad bar, a carved lean protein, steamed vegetables, then dessert only if it fits the day.

Everbowl opened at the River Front Center on August 26, 2026, with a second campus location listed for the University Union for fall 2026. Açaí and superfood bowls, smoothies and toasts. A regular bowl with fruit toppings is a reasonable breakfast; the granola and nut-butter drizzle are where a bowl doubles. It is a 100-plus location chain, so calories are posted.

The Habit Burger Grill in the University Union posts calories too (it has around 390 US locations). The grilled chicken salad, or a Charburger lettuce-wrapped with no fries, keeps a lunch under control.

Gyro 2 Go, Ace Sushi and Choolaah Indian BBQ are also on the eateries list; we did not check their menus for this guide.

A few minutes from the south side of campus

Garden of Eat'n, 6415 Elvas Avenue (95819). About 0.2 miles from the center of campus. Salads, wraps and rice bowls. The Avocado Citrus Salmon salad, or a rice bowl with grilled chicken and the dressing on the side. Two locations, so no posted calories: photograph the bowl.

Bento Box, 1420 65th Street, Suite 100 (95819). About 0.3 miles, in the F65 plaza. Teriyaki, sushi, bento and bowls. The chicken teriyaki bowl with sauce on the side, or the sesame chicken salad. Four locations, no posted calories.

Along J Street

Mediterranean Bistro & Roastery, 715 56th Street (95819). About a mile, roughly a 20-minute walk along J Street. Kabobs, shawarma, hummus, falafel and Fattoush or Greek salads. The chicken kabob plate with salad in place of rice is a high-protein lunch. Single location, no posted calories.

Selland's Market-Café, 5340 H Street (95819). About a mile, walkable or a short bike ride. Family-owned since 2001, with a deli case: herb salmon fillet or herb roasted chicken breast with roasted broccoli, or the Farmer's Market salad. No posted calories. It also appears in the city-wide guide.

Across the Guy West Bridge

The Guy West Bridge is the pedestrian and bike suspension bridge over the American River on the north edge of campus. It puts the Campus Commons and Fair Oaks-and-Howe retail area 25 to 30 minutes away on foot, or a short ride.

Zócalo University Village, 466 Howe Avenue (95825). About 1.2 miles. Sit-down Mexican with weekend brunch. The Pepita Salad or the grilled salmon (Salmon Con Mango) are the lighter plates; the chip basket is the trap. Four locations, no posted calories.

Sweetgreen, 2080 Fair Oaks Boulevard (95825). About 1.3 miles. Bowls and salads, open daily 10 to 10, calories posted. Grilled chicken bowl, extra greens, vinaigrette on the side.

Urban Plates, 2080 Fair Oaks Boulevard (95825). Same center, same distance. Grilled chicken or salmon plate with two vegetable sides. Calories posted; the chain's May 2026 nutrition sheet lists the grilled chicken at 230 calories for 5 ounces and the grilled salmon at 330 for 5.25 ounces, before sides.

Poke Noke, 2254 Fair Oaks Boulevard (95825). About 1.35 miles. Build-your-own poke: ahi over greens or half rice, a ponzu-style sauce, light on the crunchy toppings. Local, no posted calories. Monday to Saturday 11 to 8, Sunday 12 to 7.

How do you eat well on a student schedule?

How does NutraCompass fit a student week?

Photograph the plate, it gets logged with calories and macros, and the rest of the day moves around it. A big Friday night eases the days around it instead of resetting the week. NutraCompass is built in Sacramento and has a partner track for universities; none of the restaurants on this page is part of that program, and they are listed only because the order works.

Questions people ask

The Servery at the Dining Commons (salad bar, carved lean protein, steamed vegetables), Everbowl at the River Front Center, and the grilled chicken salad at The Habit in the University Union.

What is the closest healthy restaurant to Sac State?

Garden of Eat'n at 6415 Elvas Avenue, about 0.2 miles from the center of campus, followed by Bento Box in the F65 plaza at about 0.3 miles.

Yes, via the Guy West Bridge over the American River. Expect 25 to 30 minutes on foot from the center of campus, or a short bike ride.

Everbowl, The Habit, Sweetgreen and Urban Plates do, because they are chains with 20 or more locations. The rest are local or small chains, so photograph the plate.
